How Premier League away allocations actually work

April 5, 2026 · by Ticketscore Editorial

Premier League home clubs are required to allocate a minimum of 3,000 seats — or 15% of ground capacity, whichever is smaller — to visiting supporters for league fixtures. The 3,000 number is widely known. The mechanics of how those seats are distributed among applying supporters, and the exceptions that reshape the number in practice, are less widely understood.

Applying for away tickets

Away allocations are managed by the visiting club, not the home club. Supporters must hold a valid membership or season ticket with the visiting club to apply. A points-based system ranks applicants by attendance history at previous away fixtures. Higher-point applicants get access earlier and to better categories where multiple categories exist.

The result is that new members without away-attendance history rarely secure tickets to marquee fixtures — Manchester United at Anfield, Arsenal at Tottenham — regardless of how quickly they act. Attendance history at less-prominent away fixtures builds up the point total that unlocks access to higher-demand matches later.

Face value and pricing

Away ticket face value is capped at £30 across all Premier League fixtures, held to that level by the League itself since 2020. This is materially below equivalent home ticket pricing at most clubs. The rule does not apply to cup competitions, where face values can be significantly higher.

Exceptions to the 3,000-seat number

Several venues have practical capacities below 3,000 for visiting supporters. Stamford Bridge and Craven Cottage have historically operated closer to 2,500. Community Stadium in Brentford is approximately 1,600. The 15%-of-capacity rule kicks in below 20,000 total capacity, which affects several venues.

Resale considerations

Reselling away tickets outside the visiting club's controlled channels is prohibited under Premier League rules and can result in the visiting club revoking the buyer's membership. Buyers using unofficial resale platforms for away tickets should understand this: the ticket may work on the day, but the connected membership and its accumulated points will not survive club scrutiny if the resale is detected.
