Behind-goal vs sideline seating for away supporters

May 17, 2026 · by Ticketscore Editorial

Away supporter allocations at Premier League venues are almost always positioned behind one of the goals rather than along the sidelines. The convention is near-universal. The reasons — some historical, some structural — are worth understanding for supporters travelling to venues they have not previously visited.

Why behind the goals

The primary reason is crowd separation. Segregating away supporters into a single contiguous block simplifies stewarding and reduces contact between rival supporter groups on the way in and out of the stadium. Behind-goal placements typically have dedicated entry and exit routes, and the block can be sealed off from adjacent home supporter areas with barriers and steward lines.

The secondary reason is atmospheric. Behind-goal supporter groups traditionally lead singing and coordinated support. Placing away supporters in a comparable position at away venues allows both fan groups to conduct their supportive practices without direct visual overlap.

Consequences for the football experience

Behind-goal seating offers close proximity to the on-pitch action at one end but limited tactical visibility for play at the far end. Fixtures with a high number of goals or attacking moments concentrated at one end can be experienced very differently depending on which end the away supporters are behind.

Sideline seating — occasionally available in specific limited allocations, more commonly at neutral or European fixtures — offers superior tactical viewing but less atmospheric intensity.

Venue-specific differences

Some Premier League venues place away allocations in the upper tier behind the goal rather than the lower tier. The Emirates operates an upper-tier away section. Old Trafford has a mixed upper-and-lower-tier arrangement. Buyers particularly sensitive to sightline or steward proximity considerations should check the specific away block layout for the venue before travelling.

Practical recommendations

Away supporters attending an unfamiliar venue for the first time should plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before kickoff to allow for extended external steward checks and the frequently constrained approach to away entrances. The extra time also allows first-time visitors to identify the location of their seats within the away block, which is not always intuitive at unfamiliar venues.
